To encourage students to evaluate themselves and to review their work

Aim

To encourage students to evaluate themselves and to review their work.

Evidence and reflection

This can be done informally, e.g., when a story is brought for marking the student can be asked for his or her opinion on it. More formally, perhaps at the completion of a project, students could fill in a comment form to indicate what they had liked best/least about it, what they had found easy/difficult about it, what they had learned from it (content and skills), what they think they need to practise more or try harder at etc. Another excellent strategy, if the students can write freely, is to ask them to keep a journal in which they can review their achievements on a regular basis.

Extension

Such procedures will reveal specific difficulties which students experience and help the teacher to match future tasks appropriately. However, it is necessary to consider what difficulties some students might experience. How could the teacher help them to articulate their own needs?
