To investigate teachers' handling of students’ responses within 'question‑and‑answer' exchanges.
Choose three five‑minute periods during a teaching session, (beginning/middle/end,) and record how the teacher handles student responses during each period.
The responses can be related to the use of pausing, prompting and probing discussed above. Remember that the use of these strategies should be matched to teacher’s purpose.
Analysing the data may help reflection upon the teacher's intentions, and whether they were fulfilled. It may also illuminate the extent to which student responses are 'heard' and engaged with by teachers. What effects can be identified resulting from the ways in which student responses were handled?
