To discuss the benefits of self-assessment and peer-assessment with your learners

Aim

To discuss the benefits of self-assessment and peer-assessment with your learners.

Reflection

Discuss with your students the benefits of self- and peer-assessment.  Ask them to make a list of the benefits and disadvantages of these types of feedback (e.g. self confidence, reluctance to comment on other’s work etc).
Follow this up in your session (or future sessions) by using self and peer assessment strategies such as:

  • asking students to give anonymous feedback (such as one positive and one point to improve) on a post-it and put it on a desk for the student to collect at the end of the session;
  • using the assessment matrix/criteria to ask students to cross-examine their own work and set themselves three goals for improvement.  Spend some time in tutorial or class to ask students if they think they have achieved these goals.
