To evaluate a teaching session

Aim

To evaluate a teaching session with particular reference to the appropriate application of subject knowledge.

Evidence and reflection

1. Plan to teach a session involving some new learning. In doing so, consider: what you want students to learn; what knowledge you need in order to support their learning; and what classroom activities are most appropriate. Having thought about the possibilities be prepared to respond to student input.

2. Obtain a record of what happens. You could set up a video, make an audio recording or ask a colleague to observe you, making detailed notes on what is said by both you and the students.

3. Teach the session.

4. Analyse what happened under headings of the three key evaluative questions:

  • Did students learn what was expected, and why?
  • How did teacher knowledge support learning?
  • How did student and teacher activities facilitate learning?

Extension

Discuss your findings with a colleague and consider the consequences of what you have learned.
