To consider grouping strategies from the perspective of the pupils

Aim

To consider grouping strategies from the perspective of the pupils.

Evidence and reflection

Arrange to interview a few pupils, either from your own class or from the class of another teacher. Talk to them about the different ways in which a teacher might group her pupils for activities in the classroom. Ask their opinions about these different strategies:

  • Which are the group organisations to which they respond well?
  • In what kind of groups do they feel they learn best?
  • What are the reasons stated for not liking particular forms of group organisation?

Extension

Does the information gleaned from the interviews have any bearing on how you might organise your classroom groups in the future?
