Aim
To analyse the involvement of pupils in whole class parts of lessons.
Evidence and reflection
The introduction of the NLS and NNS has meant that whole-class introductions and plenaries have become established elements of many lessons. There are many types of whole class work, with associated benefits and problems. In this activity you should attempt to record, over time, the involvement of at least two pupils in these parts of lessons. As far as possible, choose the children to be representative of particular groups in the class. Ask yourself:
Are they participating?
What is the nature and quality of their participation?
Are there particular types of introduction and plenary to which they respond particularly positively / negatively?
Extension
Clearly the purpose of this activity is to allow your reflections to influence your teaching. Share your findings with colleagues, using them as a basis for the discussion of common features of whole class teaching.
