To identify pupils who exhibit quiet, non‑participatory behaviour during your lesson.
Evidence and reflection
Given the nature of the behaviour you are trying to observe it may be necessary to video a lesson and watch it carefully several times to identify those who do not participate. You might want to reflect back on a video recording which you produced for a previous activity.
As you watch the video try to notice:
Pupils who do not volunteer to speak or answer questions.
Pupils who avoid being chosen to speak, perhaps by only putting up their hand as someone else is chosen to answer.
Pupils who seem embarrassed if they feel that they have become the centre of attention.
Pupils who always provide monosyllabic answers or who refuse to speak at all.
What did the teacher do? Did it help and if so in what way?

Having identified pupils who might exhibit quiet behaviour, what might you do to encourage their active participation in future? How might you ensure that you continue to notice and monitor those pupils who do not demand your attention?
