To consider promoting positive images of various ethnic minority groups

Aim

To consider promoting positive images of various ethnic minority groups

Evidence and reflection

  • List all the things that you think you currently do in your work setting to promote positive images of the various social and cultural groups that make up our society.
  • Consider your list. How far is that list a reflection of the context in which you work? Would the list be different if, for instance, you worked in an all-white setting, or with people from a variety of ethnic backgrounds? Does the social class composition of your school have any bearing on your practice?
  • Compare and discuss lists with a colleague who has also undertaken this activity. If at all possible choose a colleague within a different school which has a different ethnic and social class composition.

Follow up

How might you develop or adapt your approach? Be on the look - out over a period for opportunities to promote positive images. Did they occur naturally? Do you need specific strategies for promoting positive images of different ethnic groups? What sorts of strategies could you try out in your setting?  Make a list of ideas for discussion with colleagues at the next opportunity.
