To review how language is used to support relationships in your setting.

Evidence and Reflection

Read some of the materials provided on this site about modelling and the impact that the language used by practitioners can have on children.

Consider whether you consciously use language, in the presence of children, to demonstrate how to politely assert your opinion, model to children how they can respectfully disagree with their peers or resolve conflicts.

Now take time to record how the children speak to each other. Do you hear them imitating language they have heard used by the adults in the setting?

Reflect upon the use of language and whether there are ways this aspect of your practice could be developed.

Extension

Work with a colleague to plan how modelling could be used in your setting to support children to develop the skills needed to develop and maintain relationships with their peers. If possible plan to discuss this as a staff team. As we have noted practice which is consistent across the setting is more likely to reap positive benefits.
