To think through the extent and effects of moves to subject specialism in primary schools.
Think back upon your professional experiences of how subject teaching is managed. Do there seem to be subjects that require a specialist? Is this different from a situation where ‘expertise is maximised’ through such means as class-swapping? Thinking about your own circumstances, who are the ‘subject experts’ on your staff?
What would you see as the advantages and dis-advantages of having teachers with subject specialisms in the primary phase of schooling? What do we gain? What do we lose?
