To identify how children feel about themselves in a school context

Aim

To identify how children feel about themselves in a school context.

Evidence and reflection

Children can be asked to complete ‘Me at School' sheets (Mortimore et al., 1986). They should be completed by each child individually and can be administered to a whole class simultaneously. Each item can be read by the teacher in turn. Children should put a cross in the box which is ‘most true for me'.

The children's responses will give an indication of their overall feelings about themselves at school and the items can be scored and aggregated. Scoring is from one to five for items 1, 3, 5, 6, 7 and 9. It is from five to one for items 2, 4, 8, 10 and 11. If an item is missed, code 0. If a more specific analysis is required then the following groups of items can be identified:

  • 3, 7 and 10 relate to relationships with other children
  • 1, 2 and 8 relate to anxiety
  • 4, 5 and 9 relate to learning
  • 6 and 11 relate to behaviour.
