To investigate teachers' handling of pupils’ responses within 'question‑and‑answer' exchanges.
Choose three five‑minute periods during a teaching session, (beginning/middle/end,) and record how the teacher handles pupil responses during each period.
The responses can be related to the use of pausing, prompting and probing discussed above. Remember that the use of these strategies should be matched to teacher’s purpose.
Analysing the data may help reflection upon the teacher's intentions, and whether they were fulfilled. It may also illuminate the extent to which pupil responses are 'heard' and engaged with by teachers. What effects can be identified resulting from the ways in which pupil responses were handled?
