Part 5 is the final, synoptic part of the book. It integrates major themes through an examination of teacher expertise and professionalism. ‘Expertise’ (Chapter 16) focuses on how we can bring together reflective teaching and the scholarship of teaching and learning in order to develop expert teaching. The chapter returns to the ten principles outlined in Chapter 4 and considers how we might develop these through our teaching. Chapter 17 on ‘Professionalism’ considers the role that teaching in higher education plays within our societies and suggests how it might contribute to societal change.
