To use different sources to deepen understanding about a particular student

Aim

To use different sources to deepen understanding about a particular student.

Evidence and reflection

  • For one of your students, select:
One piece of numerical data, for example a recorded level of attainment, test score or result from a summative assessment.
    - A second source of information about the same student that is non-numerical. This may be for example a piece of their work, notes from observations or correspondence with a parent or carer.
    - A third source of information where you have communicated with the student about their work – for example, in your marking comments, in writing a report or in a recorded online exchange.
    - If your classroom has a video-recording system, you might also select a brief video clip that captures the student engaging with a lesson.
  • Look at all the sources of information you have collected, as a whole. Reflect on the following questions:
Why have you selected this student?
Why have you selected these sources? Is the information typical or atypical for this student?
How do these inform you about the student, their learning and the learning environment?
  • Consider any ways that the activity has made you think differently about the student, and how the different sources contributed to that change.

Extension

Reflecting on this data, how could it be used to inform your future practice? What further sources of information could you collect that would deepen your understanding further?
