To evaluate a teaching session with reference to the appropriate application of subject knowledge

Aim

To evaluate a teaching session with particular reference to the appropriate application of subject knowledge.

Reflection

1. Plan to teach a session involving some new learning.  In doing so, consider:  what you want students to learn; what knowledge you need in order to support their learning; and what activities are most appropriate.  Having thought about the possibilities be prepared to respond to student input.

2. Obtain some sort of record of what happens.  For instance, you could set up a video, make an audio recording or ask a colleague to observe you.  In the case of the latter, try to get your colleague to make detailed notes on what is said by both you and the students.

3.Teach the session.

4. Analyse what happened under headings of the three key evaluative questions:

  • Did students engage as expected, and why?
  • How did teacher knowledge support learning?
  • How did student and teacher activities facilitate learning?

Discuss your findings with a colleague and consider the consequences of what you have learned.
