2. Creating conditions for learning

Part 2 concerns the construction of environments to support high-quality teaching and learning. We begin by considering the range of contexts that help to shape teaching and learning in higher education (Chapter 5) – and we note the ways in which people contribute to and challenge the impact of such contexts. We then move to the heart of teaching and learning environments with a focus on the relationships between students and teachers in higher education (Chapter 6). Because such relationships are so crucial for students’ success, this is an extremely important chapter. Chapter 7 builds further and considers how we make disciplinary knowledge accessible to our students by engaging deeply with our teaching. Finally, we consider a range of learning spaces in higher education and beyond (Chapter 8) and the ways in which they can help students to engage in high-quality learning.
