To consider the use of assessment in your setting

Aim

To consider the use of assessment in your setting.

Evidence and reflection

Review your assessment processes. Identify those which are formative and those, if any, which are summative. Consider their purpose and how they are used, specifically whether they are used to:

  • provide an overview of all children in the setting;
  • identify the needs of particular children;
  • identify which children haven’t yet completed a task;
  • as part of an audit, for example to assess equalities.

Extension

Reflect on whether these assessment methods are fit-for-purpose – whether they provide the information you need, whether the information is useful to practitioners, children and families and/or local authorities and government bodies. Consider whether any of these assessments would benefit from being adapted following your reading and reflection.
