To reflect upon how children are viewed in modern society
To reflect upon how children are viewed in modern society.
Evidence and Reflection
Read Tarr, P., (2003) ‘Reflections on the Image of the Child: Reproducer or Creator of Culture’ in Art Education Vol. 56 No. 4 pp. 6 – 11 available at http://www.jstor.org/stable/3194058
Consider your understanding of the phrase ‘the image of the child’ and where Rinaldi (1998) is quoted saying:
‘The image of the child is above all a cultural (and therefore social and political) convention that makes it possible to recognize (or not) certain qualities and potential in children.’
Discuss your thoughts with a peer. During your discussion consider what you believe to be the accepted image of the child in today’s society. Identify at least three examples of what you believe contributes to this image is, for example, how children are portrayed in the media.
